Evelyn Harriett Bolt McCree died at Scotia Village Retirement Community in Laurinburg, N.C., on 14 February 2011.
She was born on 14 February 1915 on the Stokes farm at Bayle City in Fayette County, Ill.., the daughter of Cecil Vivian Stokes and Calvin Bolt. She attended school in the rural community of Ramsey, Ill., and after graduating valedictorian from Ramsey High School, clerked at Thiels Department Store in Ramsey. On 18 Aug. 1935, she married Walter Alexander McCree and the couple settled in Springfield, Ill.
A homemaker and loving mother of two children, she was also a civic leader and a businesswoman. She served as president of the Lawrence Grade School P.T.A. and helped initiate and sang in the organization's Mothersingers Chorus that performed for civic functions and over radio station WCVS in Springfield, Ill. Active in the King's Daughters Circles of Springfield, from 1963 to1965 she was the president of the board of the community-wide organization of women who managed and operated the Carrie Post King's Daughters Home for Women, a retirement community.
