Eugene Thomas Bruton passed away on January 11, 2025 surrounded by his loving family and close friends. He was 75 years old. Gene was born January 27, 1949 to Dr. Charles Wilson Bruton Sr. and Mabel Ruth Wood Bruton.
There will be a visitation with the family on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service, 620 Albemarle Rd, Troy, NC, 27371, followed by a celebration of Gene’s life at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Ryan Rasmussen. A graveside service at Southside Cemetery in Troy will follow.
He was the second child of three children and grew up in Troy, NC. He graduated from West Montgomery High School, received his bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University, and his Master’s Degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Gene was married to the love of his life, Sheila Haywood Bruton for 55 years.
His professional career led him to serve the people of the State of North Carolina in various capacities with the Secretary of State and Department of Public Instruction.
Gene was a devout Christian and beloved pastor who dedicated 42 years of his life serving others and spreading the teachings of Jesus Christ, his Savior.
Gene's steadfast faith and selfless spirit touched the lives of countless individuals, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
Gene's journey of faith began at a young age, and his commitment to his beliefs only grew stronger over the years. As a pastor, he was a guiding light for his congregation, offering support, wisdom, and compassion to those in need. His sermons were not just words but a reflection of his deep love for Christ and his desire to lead others to salvation.
Beyond the pulpit, Gene's selflessness was evident in every aspect of his life. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, provide a listening ear, or offer a comforting presence. His acts of kindness and generosity were a testament to his belief in living a life of service, mirroring the teachings of Jesus.
Gene's legacy is one of love, faith, and unwavering dedication to his Savior. He leaves behind a community that is richer for having known him and a family that will forever cherish his memory. Though he has departed from this world, his spirit lives on in the hearts of those he touched.
In this time of mourning, we find solace in knowing that Gene is now at peace, reunited with his Savior in eternal glory. His life was a testament to the power of faith and the beauty of a selfless heart. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Charles Wilson Bruton Sr. and Mabel Ruth Wood Bruton and brother, Dr. Charles Wilson Bruton Jr.
Gene is survived by his wife Sheila; sons, Eugene Thomas Bruton Jr. of Garner, Michael Chadwick Bruton of Albemarle, Isaac Nathan Bruton (Anna) of Princeton; daughter, Joy Bruton Eisner (Ben) of Wilson; and sister, Ruth Bruton Morris (Jackie) of Troy.
He also leaves behind his nine grandchildren: Michael Bruton, Joshuah Bruton, Jennifer Bruton, Olivia Bruton, Andrew Bruton, Spencer Bruton, Elliot Bruton, Henry Eisner and Hayes Eisner.
The family extends sincere appreciation to Gene’s physicians and nurses who showed loving kindness and thoughtful attention over the past week.
