Mr. Eugene Wesley Blackwelder, Jr., 81, died Wednesday, December 22, at Duke University Hospital.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Laurel Hill United Methodist Church officiated by the Revs. Lamar Smith, J.W. Williams and Kelly Hunt. Due to limited parking and accessibility, the family will have a private burial in the Carter Family Cemetery following the service.
Mr. Blackwelder was born September 16, 1929 in Iredell County, a son of the late Eugene Wesley and Addie Cowan Blackwelder.
He is survived by two sons, Mark Blackwelder and wife Kimberly of Rocky Mount and Paul Blackwelder of Laurel Hill; a sister, Katherine Hart of Statesville, NC; brother-in-law William Morrow of Cleveland, NC, 2 sisters-in-law, Freddie Davis and husband Robert of Laurel Hill and Virginia Smith and husband Charles of Laurinburg; one grandson, Carter Blackwelder of Rocky Mount, He was preceded in death by his first wife of 26 years Blanche Carter Blackwelder and his second wife, Lula (Lou) Parnell Blackwelder and a sister, Margaret Morrow.
Mr. Blackwelder was a graduate of Mitchell Community College and received his Masters Degree from Appalachian State University.
He served in the US Army in the area of Chaplains Assistance.
He was employed with the Scotland County School System as a teacher and administrator. He retired as principal from Laurel Hill Elementary School. He was affectionately known as "Mr. B"A
