Maxton
Elmer Randall Parnell, 89, of Buffalo Road died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009 at his home.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Centre Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Douglas Hix officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennie McArthur and husband Robert of Maxton, two grandsons, Bob McArthur of Maxton and Randall McArthur and wife Jennifer of Laurinburg, two great grandsons, Trey Sellers and Brandon McArthur of Laurinburg; two sisters, Vashti Long of Delaware and Pat Taylor of Alabama.
He was born June 1, 1920 in Robeson County a son of the late Berry and Sallie Prevatte Parnell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Parnell, his parents, his stepmother, Belle Smith, and his brother, Reginald Parnell.
Mr. Parnell served with the US Army in World War II at Pearl Harbor, and was a former manager of Home Furniture Company in Raeford and Red Springs. He retired as manager of Helig-Myers of Raeford.
He was also a former deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, and superintendent at Centre Presbyterian Church, and he was always operating the ticket booth at the annual ingathering.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
