Elizabeth Dunne Calhoun

August 24, 1924 — September 27, 2010

Elizabeth (Betsy) Calhoun, beloved wife of Captain C.R. (Cal) Calhoun, US Navy (Ret), and since September of 2005, a resident of Scotia Village, passed away on Monday 27 September, 2010, after a long series of painful illnesses. She was placed under the care of Hospice of Scotland County, where she spent her last five days in an atmosphere of tender loving care, without pain.
Betsy was born to Edward ("Buck") Clatterbuck, and Anna Rafferty Clatterbuck, in Nikep, Allegany County, Maryland, on 24 August, 1927, from whom she inherited a strong Faith in God and a sense of devoted service to others. It thus followed that a career in Nursing was her most appropriate choice, and after graduating in the late '50's from Sacred Heart Hospital's Diploma Nursing Program, in Cumberland, Maryland, she accepted a Civil Service position as a Registered Nurse at the Army's Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC. She served there for a total of 30 years. In June of 1962, She married LCol Thomas Dunne, Medical Corps, US Army, but Tom died from a massive heart attack in 1964. Frequently assigned to the VIP Section, she was privileged to render what must have been a special brand of gentle and affectionate care. On several of his hospitalizations, President Eisenhower requested that Betsy be assigned to his case. She also was assigned to care for President Truman, General Omar Bradley, General Chenault, KIng Saud of Saudi Arabia, and Haile Selasie, the President of Ethiopia, among others. She served the wounded from the Okinawa Campaign, and later from Vietnam. Her stories of the courage displayed by amputees were inspiring, and clearly revealed her own selfless outlook. Betsy never knew a stranger, was always concerned about those who were less fortunate, or handicapped, and worried more about the little guy than she did about her self. She befriended the dining room servers, the nurses, and the housekeeping staff here at Scotia Village. and followed with great interest the welfare of their children, about whom she would inquire at every opportunity.
She married Cal Calhoun in January, 1986, and they enjoyed 24 wonderful years of travel and happy living at Caswell Beach (7 years), Wilmington, NC (12years) and Laurinburg, NC (5years). For the past five years she has had a succession of serious illnesses, frequently life-threatening and always painful. She bore the pain with Guts, Determination, and Faith in God. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and especially to her loving husband, and she shall be sorely missed. In additiion to her husband, she is survived by the children and grandchildren of Tom Dunne (from his earlier marriage), who now reside in Arizona, and by Cal's daughter and three granddaughters, who live in Wilmington, NC, and Minnesota.
Memorial Mass was 9 a.m. Saturday, October 2 at St Mary Catholic Church, Laurinburg
