Mrs. Gibson was born November 19, 1920 in Hamlet, NC, the oldest daughter of four born to the late John Lloyd and Ethel Butt Hill. A child of the Great Depression, she continued to live the values of home and family reinforced by those years. Longtime friends remember her as popular, lively, and a good dancer, traits that drew people to her from an early age. At age 17, she began dating her husband-to-be, Harold, also of Hamlet. In 1942, following her attendance at UNC-Greensboro, then called "Woman's College," they were married.
During WWII, while her husband was on active duty in the U.S Army, Mrs. Gibson moved to Miami FLA, sharing quarters with a younger sister and working at the Army Air Corps base, then headed by her father. While there, she enjoyed the "Big Band" orchestras of the time, which were brought in to entertain the troops.
Following the war, Mr. and Mrs. Gibson spent a short period in San Francisco, CA moving to Laurinburg, NC shortly before the birth of their oldest son, John, in 1946. Subsequently, a daughter Linda arrived, and another son, Alan, was born a few years later.
Mrs. Gibson worked for many years, first at Southern National Bank and then as an executive secretary at McNair Seed Company, and was considered an exceptional employee. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Laurinburg, the Betsy Sanford Class, and was a charter member of the Laurinburg Pilot Club and the Women's Missionary Society. In addition, she loved entertaining, fishing, and playing bridge with friends.
