Elaine (Batten) Burgess

Mrs. Elaine Batten Burgess, age 96, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2020 at her home.

A funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at Laurel Hill Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Tim Maderis and Rev. Robert Hittepole.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Burgess was born November 15, 1923 in Montgomery County.  She was a daughter of the late Claude and Nannie Lamonds Batten.  She was a lifelong member and the oldest living member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church and was a retired surgical nurse with over 20 years of service with Montgomery Memorial Hospital.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved her flowers, basket weaving, her church, grandchildren, great grandchildren, her entire family and her swimming pool.

She is survived by her daughter, Gail Gillis of Troy; two grandsons, James D. Gillis, III of High Falls and David Gillis (Anissa) of Mt. Gilead; two granddaughters, Patricia Gillis and Elizabeth Cloninger (Craig) both of Troy; great grandchildren, Clay Gillis, Noah Gillis, Abigail Cloninger and Olivia Cloninger; and sister, Janie Parnell of Troy.  She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Ellis Burgess; sisters, Winnie Davis, Grace Hogan and Thelma Epps; and brothers, Carlie Batten, Wade Batten, Lacy Batten and Bud Batten.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at Laurel Hill Baptist Church.
