Laurinburg
Duncan James "Dunc" Sinclair, Jr., 85, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at his residence.
A memorial service will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. C. F. McDowell, III.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Blake Sinclair; his sons, Jim Sinclair (Brenda) of Maxton; Bill Sinclair (Jo-Annah) of Laurinburg; David Sinclair of Wilmington; and John Sinclair (Holly) of Dallas, TX; his sister, Emma Lee Ingram of Hilton Head Island, SC; a special family friend, Gertrude Graham of Laurinburg; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Matt) Byers, Alyson (Jesse) Watson, Kristi Sinclair, Duncan Sinclair, IV, Melissa Sinclair, Anna Sinclair, Ben Sinclair, Will Sinclair, and Ella Grace Sinclair; his great grandchildren, Madeline Byers and Landon Watson.
Born December 14, 1926 in Lumberton, he was a son of the late Duncan James and Juanita Burney Sinclair. He graduated from Laurinburg High School when there were only 11 grades, and graduated again from Fishbourne Military School. He then attended VMI for two years before serving with the US Army in World War II. After the war he graduated from Wake Forest University after discovering most of his classmates did not return to VMI.
Dunc served as a past president of the Laurinburg Rotary Club, of the Laurinburg chamber of Commerce, and on the Laurinburg City council for 20 years, serving as mayor pro-tem when needed. He also served as the chairman of the Social Services Board, and the Scotland Memorial Hospital board. He was president of the hospital board when the current hospital was built. He was also chairman of the board at Scotia Village when Scotia Village was built.
He also served on the Alumni Council and a Trustee at Wake Forest University. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award from the Cape Fear Council.
Dunc was an unassuming and humble person. He lived a simple life by putting his family and other ahead of himself. Many Dunc stories can be humorously told, and all would be about his simple appearance and life. One recently recalled was of the old white car he drove for about 20 years. The driver's window was always down and his left arm hanging out because the door would not shut.
Memorials may be made to NC Baptist Children's Homes, 515 Watson Ave., Thomasville, NC 27360, Boy Scouts of America, 110 Longstreet Drive, Wilmington, NC 28412, or Hospice, PO box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium and following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall.
