Doris Fay (Sherman) Korona

Doris Fay Sherman Korona, 88, passed away December 30, 2016 at The
Legacy Hospice House in Ocala, Florida.
A graveside service will be at 2:30pm on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Hillside Memorial Park in Laurinburg, N.C. A visitation will be from 1-2pm prior to the service at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg.
Doris was born July 11, 1928, in Bennettsville, South Carolina, the only
child of Edgar Burbank Sherman and Lillie Mae Hayes.
After graduating from St. John's High School (SC) in 1946, Doris moved
to Charlotte, NC and attended King's Business College. She worked as a
secretary in Charlotte until her marriage to Eugene Helms in 1957, when
the couple moved to San Bernardino, CA. Doris and Eugene moved to Ocala,
FL in 1961.
On Nov. 13, 1962 Doris began secretarial work at the Silver Springs
Sportswear Corp. where she was employed for 24 years. From 1986 thru
1987 she was employed by Care-1 Harrell Medical Center as a Unit
Supervisor; she resigned in order to care for her elderly mother.
On Jan. 12, 1972 husband Eugene passed away after a 5-year battle with
cancer. Doris and Virgil Korona married on Nov. 25, 1981 in Ocala, FL.
Doris enjoyed animals, birds, plants and poetry; she was an avid
collector of many different forms of artistic objects and enjoyed flying
with Virgil, a small aircraft pilot.
Doris had no children of her own. She is survived by stepchildren Kathy
(Helms) Stubbs, Dale Korona and Joanne (Korona) Denton; and several
stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil
Laurence Korona; previous husband Eugene Clayton Helms and stepson Billy
Eugene Helms; father Edgar Burbank Sherman and mother Lillie Mae Hayes.
