Born on April 6, 1936, in Scotland County, he was a son of the late Milton Strickland and Viola Goins Strickland. Donnie's life was one of dedication and service. He shared 64 wonderful years with his loving wife, Deavie L. Strickland, creating a warm and welcoming home together. Their family grew to include a son, Don A Strickland of Hasty, and a daughter, Donna Frances Chavis (Lee) of Laurinburg. Donnie's joy was multiplied with the birth of his grandson, Nicholas Chavis of Raleigh, who became a source of immense pride and happiness. Donnie's family circle was vast and full of love. He is survived by his brothers, Miller Strickland (Geraldine) of Bennettsville, SC, Bracy Strickland (Velma), and Tracy Strickland both of Laurinburg; and special family member, Thomas Locklear of Laurinburg. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Graham Strickland and Colden Strickland; sisters, Margaret Quick and Nettie Idalia Strong; and sister-in-law, Patricia Locklear.
A patriot through and through, Donnie honorably retired from the US Air Force, having served his country with distinction. He loved his military life and was gone a lot but he took care of his family. Following his military career, he worked as a truck driver with Wallace Trucking. Donnie's commitment to his community was further exemplified by his 30-plus years as a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he formed lasting friendships and provided support to many. Donnie had an infectious love for life, which was evident in his many interests. He never met a stranger, always greeting everyone with a warm smile and an open heart. His passion for tractors and gardening spoke to his connection with the land and the simple pleasures of life. Donnie's love for family was paramount, and he cherished every moment spent with them, whether at home or while traveling. His fascination with airplanes remained a constant, reflecting his adventurous spirit and his years of service in the Air Force. He was known for his kindhearted nature and generous spirit
The family suggest memorials be made to Calvary Baptist Church, PO Box 1958, Laurinburg, NC 28353.
