Daniel Malloy "Dan" or "Little Pemo" Stewart, 91, passed away Tuesday, February 23.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. Visitation will follow in the church fellowship hall.
He is survived by his wife, Willowdeen Dukes Stewart; his daughter, Cindy Stewart Young of West Jefferson; his son, Randy Stewart (Darleen) of Laurinburg, and his grandchildren, Arin and Phillip. He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Stewart.
Born October 16, 1924 in Laurinburg, he was a son of the late Daniel M. And Mary Singletary Stewart. He served with the US Army Air Corps in World War II, and vowed afterward to never leave Laurinburg. For decades he worked at the Laurinburg Post Office, and in early life he was a bass player in a jazz band headed by Jimmy Morgan.
Dan loved golf, and was a member at Scotch Meadows Golf Course for 61 years.
He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church and a choir member for over 50 years. He was also active in the Laurinburg Lions Club where he earned the title of their "broom man" for the number of brooms that he sold to benefit the blind.
After retirement from the Post Office, he served 8 years at St. Andrews and 8 years at the garden center at Wal-Mart.
Dan never met a stranger and was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
