Clark Beryl Hanmer, MD died of biliary cancer on February 3, 2017, in his home, as was his wish.  Born May 6, 1951 in Big Rapids, Michigan, he graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1969, Michigan State University, BS in zoology 1973, Wayne State University, MD degree in 1977.  Post-graduate education included Gundersen Clinic, LaCrosse, WI 1978; Duke/AHEC Family Medicine Residency, Fayetteville, NC 1980; Ohio State University Family Medicine Education Fellowship, Columbus, Ohio 1988.

He practiced and taught clinical medicine in Duplin County, NC 1980-82 (National Health Service Corp); Emlenton, PA 1982-88; Columbus, Ohio 1988-96; La Crosse, WI 1996-04; and Laurinburg, NC 2004-15.  He retired prematurely in late 2015 because of his illness.

He chronicled his year of diagnosis and treatment and wove it into a delightful memoir titled: Dancing with My Cancer Demon: All the Way to a NIH/NCI Immunotherapy Clinical Trial, 2016, available at Lulu.com.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years Deborah Redhead Hanmer, daughter Janel Z. Hanmer, 2 grandsons Turing and Huxley Zelsnack (Pittsburgh), son Stuart D. Hanmer, (Laurinburg); brother Lee Kirk Hanmer, (Florida), sister Diane Jones, (Michigan), and sister Dawn Wahl, (South Dakota) He was predeceased by his mother, Evelyn Lees, born 1920, died 1996 and father, Hugh Kirk Hanmer, born 1919, died 2004.  Both were from Norwich, Ontario, Canada.

A memorial service will be held at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 11 at 11 am officiated by the Rev. Dr. Duane Hix and Rev. Dr. Neal Carter.  The family will receive guests at the church beginning at 10 a.m.  All are welcome to attend.  The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dr. Hanmer’s name to the Clark B. Hanmer memorial climbing wall at Flip the Prison/Growing Change, a non-profit organization that works with returning veterans and at-risk youth to grow sustainable food.  The guard tower at the old Wagram prison site will be transformed into a climbing wall.
