Clarence Cole "Buck" Knotts, II, was a good teacher, a good coach, a good friend, a good grandfather, a good father, a good husband, but most of all he was a good man. He loved life and lived for his family and friends. Heaven now has a new residence that will surely be missed down here.
A memorial service will be 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
Born December 24, 1930 in Hamlet, North Carolina, he was an early Christmas present to his parents Clarence Cole and Ruth Love Knotts. Voted best figure and best athlete he lettered in all three sports for the Hamlet Red Rams as a star basketball, baseball, and football player graduating in 1949. He went on to play four years of football as a Duke Blue Devil while working on a college degree. During winter break of his senior year he married his high school sweetheart, Bobby Summerlin. After graduating in 1953 from Duke University with a B.A. in History, he then entered the Army and served for two years. Before moving back to Laurinburg in 1957 he acquired his Masters in Education from East Carolina University and had two children, Cole and Linda. Over the next 27 years he shaped the minds and bodies of thousands of students and athletes in Scotland County. He wore many different hats throughout his career including history teacher, coach (baseball, basketball, football, and golf), assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, associate superintendent, and interim superintendent. His compassion for children and the community spilled over into his work with the Boy Scouts of America, Literacy Council, the Head Start Program, and the United Way. He loved all sports especially football, basketball and anything involving the Duke Blue Devils.
However, his heart belonged to the joy of his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Ruth Huntley Johnson along with her husband, William Lee "Cotton" Johnson, and Mary Ellis Taylor and her husband William James Taylor, Sr.
He is survived by his wife Oveda Summerlin "Bobby" Knotts, his son Cole Knotts, his daughter Linda Horne, a granddaughter Summer Lin Nunn and her husband Thomas Larry "JR" Nunn, Jr., and a grandson Terrell Knotts Horne which celebrate his life and the love they have for him.
