Charles Eugene Sligh

Charles Eugene "Gene" Sligh, 89, of Lanoca Avenue died Monday, April 27, at Morrison Manor following a short illness.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

He is survived by a daughter, Betty Leviner and husband, Mickey of Florence, SC; and a son, Mac Sligh and wife, Nell of Jacksonville, a brother, Eddie Sligh of Concord; a sister, Laura Weikel and four grandchildren, Jamie Leviner and Emily Leviner of Florence, Cal Sligh of Jacksonville, and Margaret Parkman. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles E. "Chuck" Sligh and his wife, Mary Elizabeth "Mary Lib" McCallum Sligh, and three brothers, Billy Sligh, Freeman Sligh and Carlton Sligh.

Born February 29, 1920 McColl, SC, a son of the late C. O. and Myrtle Freeman Sligh. He graduated from McColl High School, Wingate Junior College, and Gupton-Jones Embalming School. Gene faithfully served his country in the US Army for 4 years in Northern Ireland, England, North Africa, Sardinia, and Italy during World War II, and moved to Laurinburg in 1946 where he served as an ambulance driver and a licensed funeral director and embalmer for McDougald Funeral Home. In 1953 he began serving with the US Post Office, walking a delivery route that would total 2 ½ times around the world before his retirement after 30 years of dedicated service.

He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, the Laurinburg Masonic Lodge, and an active member of the Laurinburg Kiwanis Club.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
