Carol Bean Tate

September 10, 1955 — May 4, 2015

Laurinburg, NC

Carol Bean Tate, 59, finished her course in faith on Monday, May 4.

A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Jefferies.

She is survived by her husband, Col. Ret. Paul A. Tate; her sons, Captain Paul Tate, Jr., MD (Jennifer) of Spring Lake and Seth Tate of Murphy, NC; her daughter, 2 Lieutenant Becky Harr (Jesse) of Spring Lake; her father, Ellis Bean of South Paris, ME; her brother, Michael Bean of York, ME; her sister, Laura Bean of Brunswick, ME; her grandchildren, Ayva Robinson of Laurinburg, Kiersten Tate and Madelyn Tate of Spring Lake.

Carol was born September 10, 1955 in Waltham, MA, was also a daughter of the late Faye Dorothea Harriman Bean, and grew up in South Paris, ME. She graduated from Oxford Hill High School and the University of Maine with a degree in early childhood education. There at the University of Maine she was one of the first women to run track in varsity athletics.

As a Teaching Assistant at Fort Bragg, NC in 1977, she met her future husband with whom she once ran the All-American Marathon in Ft. Bragg. As a military spouse, spanning 30 years, she traveled throughout the United States and Europe. In 1983 she received her Masters in special education from the University of Tennessee. In addition to serving as a Special Education teacher at several locations in the civilian school systems, she also served as the Director of Child Development Services on several military installations. A position she held in Berlin, Heidelburg, Fort Drum, and Fort Campbell. She later taught Special Education in Minnesota.

Moving to Laurinburg in 2007, she was a Special Education teacher at Carver Middle School, and later at E. E. Smith High School in Fayetteville. In 2013 she began teaching Special Education at Covington Street Primary School in Laurinburg. She was described in a note sent to her by her pastor, the Rev. Gene Tyson, now of Fuquay-Varina: " . . . you have a heart for the forgotten . . ." As recalled by others: "Her passion in life was working with children."

In Laurinburg she served as a Sunday school teacher and reorganized the Sunday school lessons to be more pertinent to today's world at the First United Methodist Church. She was the Director of Children's Ministry, and repainted and remodeled the children's classrooms to resemble ancient temples of Biblical times.

Her husband, children, and grandchildren held their special place within her heart, time, and activities. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing with her children and grandchildren. As they have recalled: "We've watched nearly every musical with Mom . . . more than once."

Her favorite place to connect spiritually with God was by the ocean in her home in Maine.

Carol was a most humble lady. She deflected almost any attempt to praise her to someone else, realizing long ago that she was who she was because of others.
