Mr. Carl Lester Jones, Jr., 80, of 7111 Morrison Lane died Sunday, April 29, at the Edwin Morgan Center.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Caledonia United Methodist Church Cemetery. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Neal Carter and the Rev. Elizabeth Forester.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Liles (Sue) McLaurin Jones; two sons; Carl Lester (Les) Jones, III and wife, Renee of Laurinburg and Ruebin McLaurin (Mac) Jones and wife, Julie of Pinehurst; two daughters, Marilyn Liles Jones of Raleigh, and Susan Mae Jones Turner and husband, Rob of Wilson; a brother, Ray Jones of Laurinburg; a sister Ann Jones Page of Greensboro and Holden Beach; seven grandchildren, Carl Jones, IV, Sara Beth Jones, Davis Jones, Patricia Jones, Virginia Jones, Mary Evans, and Sally Evans.

Born July 17, 1926 on Vance street in Laurinburg, he was a son of the late Carl L. and Ethel Mercer Caddell Jones. Upon graduation from Laurinburg High School, he attended Duke University for two years and entered the US Army. In 1945 he was on a troop ship headed to the Pacific theatre when the war ended. He returned to graduate from Duke in 1949.

Returning to Laurinburg, Carl began his career as the director of the local housing authority. In 1962 he took over management of McLaurin-McArthur Chevrolet. The business was owned by Carl, Les, and Mac Jones until it was sold in 2000.

Active in his community, Carl was the last surviving member of the original board of directors of Southern National Bank. He was a past president of American Legion Post 50, Scotch Meadows Country Club, and past chairman of Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
