Carl Turner Clayton, Jr., 85, died Monday, October 5, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. C. F. McDowell, III. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Wall Clayton; a daughter, Sylvia Ann Sweeley and husband, John of Rocky Mount; a sister, Barbara Coats of Clayton; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Born in Johnston County, NC he was a son of the late Carl T. and Ella Clayton. In World War II Carl proudly served in the US Navy, and afterwards began working with Electrical Equipment Company in Raleigh. He and his family moved to Laurinburg in 1952 where he continued with Electrical Equipment Co.

For 46 years Carl served at treasurer of the Laurinburg Rotary Club, and upon his retirement was granted lifetime membership in the club. He was also an active member of the First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, on the building, grounds, and properties committee, as a Sunday school teacher, and served as a cook for many Baptist breakfasts, being well known for his grits. Legend has it that if you grew up in the Baptist church, Carl taught you how to cook grits.

Memorials are requested for the First Baptist Church, PO Box 883, Laurinburg, NC 28353.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
