Dr. Carl Douglas Bennett, 89, professor emeritus of St. Andrews Presbyterian College died Wednesday, August 30, 2006 in Laurinburg, North Carolina.

Dr. Bennett was born in Waycross, GA on July 22, 1917. He was the son of George Alexander and Tivvie Spell Bennett. He attended public schools there and briefly Savannah and Jacksonville, FL and later attended Emory University where he received three degrees. His lifelong love was teaching literature, for one year at West Georgia College, Carrollton, GA; fifteen years at Wesleyan College, Macon, GA; and more than thirty years at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

In the summer of 1964 he traveled over 5000 miles in India on a Fullbright-Hays Grant in Indian Civilization. Other study grants were from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Carnegie Institute. He was visiting professor at Seinan Gakuin University, Fukuoka, Japan, while on sabbatical 1980/81. He also taught for several years in the cooperative program with Scotia Village, St. Andrews Institute for Lifelong Learning. In 1942-44 he served in the Civilian Public Service as a conscientious objector to war.

Dr. Bennett was the author of one book, Joseph Conrad, and contributed articles to the Encyclopedia of World Literature and to professional journals.

Dr. Bennett was a member of the First Baptist Church, Laurinburg, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for more than thirty-five years. He was active in community affairs. He was chair of the Macon Interracial Committee in 1953-54, director of and Interns in Industry Project of the American Friends Service Committee in Atlanta the summers of 1953 and 1954, and a volunteer with Boy Scouts of America and Habitat for Humanity. He served on the Scotland County Literacy Council and enjoyed many years of participating in the annual CROP Walk to promote hunger relief.

His PhD degree from the Institute of Liberal Arts at Emory prepared him for the challenge when he was invited to join the faculty for the fledging institution, at that time called Consolidated Presbyterian College, which was to become St. Andrews Presbyterian College. For two years, 1959/60 and 1960/61, he was part of the faculty team planning the curriculum of the Christianity and Culture program that was the core of the new collegea
