Betty Joan Thomas, 94 of Laurinburg, passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at her sister’s home.
The visitation to honor Betty's life will take place on February 5, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service and Crematorium. Those who knew Betty are encouraged to attend and celebrate the profound impact she made on so many lives throughout her journey.
Born on April 12, 1931, in Vigo County, IN, she was a daughter of the late Eric Vansandt Thomas and Anna Mary Krider Thomas. Betty's rich life was characterized by her unwavering dedication to education, having retired after more than 40 years of exemplary service in the Scotland County School System. Her passion for teaching even took her beyond American borders, as she imparted knowledge while teaching in Panama.
Betty cherished spending time with her family, particularly her beloved nieces and nephews, who remember her as a loving aunt. She was well-known for her vibrant personality, often seen nestled in the aisles of Barnes and Nobles, engrossed in her latest read. A lover of history, she frequently sought adventures at historical sites and enthusiastically traveled outside of the country, broadening her understanding of the world.
Betty is survived by her sister, Portia Thomas Byrd and her husband Richard of Laurinburg, and her brother, Eric Dean Thomas of Terre Haute, Indiana. She leaves behind a close-knit family of nieces, nephews, and a very dear friend and family member, Dorothy Barnes. Additionally, Betty will be fondly remembered by the former staff and students of Pate Gardner Elementary School, whose lives she touched during her long and impactful career.
She is preceded in death by her brothers, David Ray Thomas and Tommy Van Thomas, as well as her sisters-in-law, Earlene Thomas and Clydene Thomas.
