Mrs. Bertha Lee Lucas, 80, of Scotia Village died Sunday, April 18, at Scotia Village.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fletcher's Chapel Wesleyan Church officiated by the Revs. Jeff Collins and Glenn Harris. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery in Gibson.
She is survived by a son, Gary Joe Lucas of Parkton; three daughters, Katherine L. Stanton of Bennettsville, SC; Shelby Stubbs and Margaret Hogan of Gibson; a sister, Martha B Holmes of Gibson; 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
Born November 1, 1918 in Dillon County, SC, she was a duaghter of the late Frank and Lillie Ivey Black.
Bertha began sewing with Morgan Mills in Laurinburg which was later purchased by Springs Mills. She began attending Fletcher's Chapel in the 1950's and was baptized in Fletcher's Mill Pond. She received a local preacher's licenses and sold cupcakes to buy blocks for the new Fletcher's church. Her mission was called, 'The Church that cupcakes built.'
Her hobbies were crafts, sewing, floral arranging and singing. In 1967 she opened a florist in Gibson along with helping other merchants operate their stores.
Bertha took piano lessons from Mrs. Francis Gibson in the early 1970's and was the director of the annual 'Christmas Community Sing and Pageant' held at the Gibson Community Building.
