A. Yvonne Russell died in Laurinburg, North Carolina on December 8, 2009. She was 86 years old.
Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Friday at the Morris Morgan Room at Scotia Village officiated by the Rev. Dr. Neal Carter and the Rev. Elizabeth Forester.
Dr. Russell was born in Washington, DC. She held a B.S. from American University, an M.S. and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, and an M.D. from the University of Chicago Medical School. She completed postdoctoral research in Physiology at the Royal College of Physicians, London, and clinical training in Pediatric Cardiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Dr. Russell was a World War II Navy veteran and later a Captain in the U. S. Public Health Service.
Dr. Russell was particularly known as a skilled diagnostician. Her greatest interest in practice and research were maternal and child health, particularly for those without easy access to health care. She was a tireless advocate for the medical and scientific education of women and other historically underrepresented groups.
Educating generations of physicians and other health care professionals, Dr. Russell held professorships in Pediatrics at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, University of Cincinnati Medical School, Stanford Medical School, Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins Medical School, and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
Dr. Russell achieved great distinction as a leader of hospitals, health care systems, and medical schools. She was Dean of Students and Community Relations at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Director of Baltimore City Hospitals, Director of the Boston Public Health Service Hospital, Director of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Associate Dean of Medicine at Stanford Medical School, Deputy Director of the Division of Public Health for the State of Delaware, and Assistant Dean at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, among others. For years she was an officer of the American Academy of Pediatrics and active in many other medical organizations.
She was a devoted patron of the arts, including music, theatre, and the visual arts.
She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Harry Camper, seven children, nine grandchildren, and a sister, Helen Odette Lineweaver. The family requests that in lieu of flowers any memorials be sent to the A. Yvonne Russell, M.D. Scholarship Fund, 301 University Blvd., Galveston, TX 77555-0148.
