Anne Hopkins Melton (Anne Ramsay) of Laurinburg, North Carolina, passed away May 27, 2026, at the age of 94.
She was born May 23, 1932, at Angelina County Hospital in Lufkin, Texas, the daughter of the late Rev. Frederick Anderson Hopkins and Annie Hamiter Hopkins.
Anne grew up in York, South Carolina, and graduated from Kings College. After college she worked for many years as Director of Christian Education at Presbyterian churches in Shelby, North Carolina; Raleigh, North Carolina; and later at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.
She later married Dr. George Melton on August 23, 1975, at First Presbyterian Church in York, South Carolina. They made their home in Laurinburg, North Carolina, where she became a devoted member of Trinity Presbyterian Church of Laurinburg (USA), serving faithfully as a Ruling Elder. In their later years, Anne and George transferred their membership to Laurinburg Presbyterian Church (USA).
Anne and George loved spending time at their beloved Montreat home, entertaining family, friends, and guests on their Montreat porch. She had a deep love for family, hospitality, and travel. Anne enjoyed entertaining and cherished traveling the world with friends, including many special trips with George to Paris.
Anne was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Mary Hopkins Stallworth and husband Thomas of Clinton, South Carolina; and her brother, Robert Hamiter Hopkins of Rock Hill, South Carolina.
Anne was known for her gracious spirit, warm hospitality, and deep faith. She had a gift for making people feel welcomed and cared for, whether gathered around her table, visiting on the porch in Montreat, or sharing fellowship in the church community she loved so dearly. Her life was marked by service to the church, devotion to family, and a joyful curiosity about the world. Those who knew her will remember her kindness, her thoughtful presence, and the quiet strength of her faith.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Catherine Hopkins of Rock Hill, South Carolina, three stepchildren: George Melton Jr. and wife Gloria of Charlotte, North Carolina; Marjorie Melton Harris and husband John of Griffin, Georgia; and Carrie Melton Medlock and husband George of Laurinburg, North Carolina.
Step-grandchildren include Emily LaFontaine and husband Jon of Mooresville, North Carolina; Ali Mullins and husband Ryan of Lexington, South Carolina; Rachel Harris of Columbia, South Carolina; Justus Melton of New York, New York; David Medlock of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Jack Medlock of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Step great-grandchildren include Ryan and Brody Mullins of Lexington, South Carolina.
Nieces and nephews include Andy Stallworth of Charleston, South Carolina; Anne Stallworth Ballenger of Taylors, South Carolina; Chris Hopkins of Rock Hill, South Carolina; Catherine Hopkins Garside and husband Mark of Columbia, South Carolina; and John Hopkins and husband Rick Griggs of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Great-nieces and nephews include Mary Frances Ballenger Weed and husband Banks of Powdersville, South Carolina; Catherine Stallworth of Charleston, South Carolina; Cooper Ballenger Santiago and husband Francisco of Greenville, South Carolina; and Alexander, Annie, and Eloise Garside of Columbia South Carolina; and Ramsay Hopkins Williams of Charlotte, North Carolina
Great-great nieces and nephews include Thomas and Frannie Santiago of Greenville, South Carolina, and Emerson and Laney Weed of Powdersville, South Carolina.
A memorial service will be conducted by Pastor Mary Katherine Robinson at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church (USA) in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Service details will be shared once arrangements are finalized.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Morrison Manor Hospice House of Scotland County North Carolina for their compassionate and dedicated care of Anne Ramsay, providing her with comfort, peace, and restful time during her final days.
