Alvin Hall Smith

Dr. Alvin H. Smith, 76, of 827 Gilchrist St. died Thursday, Dec. 6, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, December 8, at Trinity Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Tom Dendy.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Hamer Smith; a son, Russell Smith and wife, Gwen of Richmond, VA; two daughters, Deborah Ann Smith of Laurinburg and Sarah Cook and husband, Larry of Ocean Isle. He also has six grandchildren, Luke Adam McKenzie, Dillon Lee Oxendine, Justin William Cook, Kimberly Laurel Cook, Rachel Jessamine Smith, and Kaitlyn Emily Smith.

Dr. Smith was born December 4, 1926 in Union, Missouri and graduated from the University of Missouri, where he received his Ph. D., and Dubuque Theological Seminary. He was an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church USA.

He was formerly on the faculty of Hampton-Sydney College and associate director of Presbyterian Guidance Center. From 1963 until his retirement he was a professor at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

Dr. Smith was a member of the Costal Carolina Presbytery and recently served as chairman of the Division of Ecumenical Relations and was a long time member of the international society of history of psychology, Cheiron. He was also active with Scotland County Habitat for Humanity and was a past member of the Scotland County Board of Mental Health.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
