Alice Smith Gentry

Alice Smith Gentry, 89, formerly of Maxton passed away Saturday, October 5.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Paul's United Methodist Church officiated by the Revs. Sylvia Collins Ball and William Gentry. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.

She is survived by her sons, Gene Gentry of Laurinburg, NC, Woody Gentry and wife JoAnn of Maxton, NC, Alton Gentry and wife Robin of Laurinburg, NC; her grandchildren, Amy Falkofske and husband Dwight of Bristow, VA, Scott Gentry and wife Jenny of Laurinburg, NC, Stacey Lewis and husband Pat of Statesville, NC, Steven Gentry of Charleston, SC, April McLean of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Mary Lynn White and husband Jeremy of Laurinburg, NC, Sunny Petty and husband Tyler of Charlotte, NC, Diana Gentry of Clayton, NC, Ashley Gentry and husband Russell of Charlotte, NC, and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Pat Gentry.

Alice was born in Fresno, CA, a daughter of the late George T. and Katherine B. Smith and widow of the late Talmage Bassil Gentry. She was first and foremost a homemaker, mother and wife of a family of farmers who's demands were large and numerous. Her cooking, sewing, crafts and decorating skills were unmatched by most. She was a retired employee of McNair's Department Store and later The Highland Shop. She was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Maxton, NC where she was a former chairperson of the Women's Circle, and Annual Bazaar, and active with the bake sales and organizer of the craft sales. She was also a member of the Red Hats Society, and was always active in local gardening and decorating with flower arrangements. As a resident of Scotia Village, her volunteer work included; keeping flowers arranged in the main lobby area, getting her roses from the main rose garden at Scotia and various other sources.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
